Character Development

One of my favorite parts of illustrating a story occurs early on in the process -- character development. Sometimes I start with a model, but it's really fun to create characters from scratch. It's kind of like making chili without a recipe... keep adding ingredients until it tastes right! For a face, begin with a fleshy-jowled oval face, add bulbous nose, two heavy-lidded eyes, sprinkle a few freckles... you get the idea. When the "ingredients" combine in just the right way, voila, you have your character!

I put together this little time-lapse image of a character from the story I am currently illustrating. Meet, the President of Bulrovia!
